Balancing Act

I love imbalanced games - so much potential for action. Like in this blitz game I played tonight. It seems like in my longer games I don't get into imbalanced positions as frequently as in my blitz games... but I guess that's just the nature of blitz.

Yes, short time controls can lead to weird stuff. A recent game the material balance was a Rook and Bishop versus and Knight and 5 pawns.

which is part of the reason why I don't want to (and probably can't even if I wanted to) get away from blitz. It's just so friggin much fun to get into stuff like your R+B vs N+PPPPP situation...

A bloody, bloody massacre. Nice win very aggressive. I used to be addicted to blitz, I wouldn't even study just play blitz. When I went to school in Chicago I hadn't played a tournament in over a year and I was going to quit chess, but there is a strong group of blitz players around that play in cafes and other places so blitz is what got me back into chess in the first place. Now I have built a strong appreciation for accurate and precise chess and I don't get as much enjoyment out of blitz as I used to. But I'm sure I'll get bored of tournament chess and go back to blitz, it's like some kind of weird life cycle.

thanks kevin. I try to balance my slow (and hopefully more precise)chess with a good dose of blitz, which is not only fun but also helps me ingrain certain tactical patterns fairly quickly. My biggest challenge right now is not to make moves too quickly in slow games. I played a 45 45 game in the T4545 league this week (post to come soon), which I won. But looking at the clock, I had 46 minutes left at the end of the game while my opponent was down to 17 minutes...

It would be awesome to have a strong group of people like you had in chicago to play some blitz, but no such luck here... Dammit, chess should be more popular in this country :)

When I say strong group of blitz players I should justify this by saying that they are indeed blitz players, they do not play slow chess so their game is completely different. One guy used to play e4 Bc4 Bxf7 and for Black he would sac the bishop too sometimes early in the opening. They know that time is more important than material and dealing with the attack is going to set you back.
