There needs to be enough space for scoresheets, all the captured pieces, a frosty beverage, a chess clock, and your wristwatch (which you remove and place on the table a la Kaspy when you've reached a won position). I believe you can get a nice custom board or table made here (no relation):

Table a bit low i find to play a decent game of chess, no place to rest the elbows. :-)

Think a lower broader sight-line might necessary for something hugemongous like that.
BTW, I wouldn't discount the Julia Roberts angle its a strong selling point.
